A dispute over US chicken imports to South Africa threatens local farming communities, with import quotas, tariffs, and jobs at stake. According to the Fairplay Movement, an agreement since 2015 allows 72,000 tons of US chicken to enter South Africa annually without anti-dumping duties, tied to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). However, this quota was meant to lapse if South Africa lost AGOA benefits. With new US tariffs hitting South African exports, the local poultry industry argues the quota is invalid, while US producers and local importers push to maintain or expand it in new trade talks with the Trump administration.

The U.S. imposition of a 30% tariff on South African imports, effective April 2, 2025, has disrupted the benefits of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which previously granted duty-free access to the U.S. market for nearly 7,000 products, including $900 million in agricultural goods in 2023. This tariff hike, part of a broader U.S. trade policy shift under President Trump, threatens South Africa’s agricultural sector, a key economic driver contributing $13.7 billion in exports in 2024. The urgency to diversify export markets, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, is now paramount to mitigate the impact and sustain export-led growth.

The climatological base period for normal is 1991-2020. The SST anomalies cited below refer to the OISST.v2.1 SST data set. Starting from June 2024, the observed climatology used to compute the dry mask was updated to 1991-2020, and the criterion modified to mask points where 10% of the training sample (i.e. 3 or more years) received less than or equal to 1 mm over a 3-month season. Total production is expected to hover around just 350–400 tons. That’s a symbolic volume for such a world-renowned appellation, when in the past decade yields averaged 2,500–3,000 tons, and as recently as 2003 production reached 5,000 tons. READ MORE

Fortunately, for many winter crop-producing regions of the Western Cape, the weather turned out positively, delivering favourable rainfall that supported better plantings and continued to present conducive growing conditions for the crops. In other winter crop-growing regions of the country, the longer-than-usual summer rainfall period improved soil moisture and dam levels, all of which are beneficial to winter crops, especially in irrigation regions. There are sufficient water supplies to support the crop throughout the season. READ MORE

Research showed that these lineages diverged roughly 230–370 thousand years ago: Middle Pleistocene timing comparable to well-known mammal splits. One recent genome study even shows that reticulated giraffe carry ancestry from historical admixture between northern and southern giraffe ~200,000 years ago: ancient mingling that didn’t erase species boundaries.
As of mid-August 2025, the equatorial Pacific remains in an ENSO-neutral state, with sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region close to average. The IRI ENSO plume forecast indicates a moderate probability (68%) of ENSO-neutral conditions for Aug–Oct 2025.

The imposition of steep U.S. tariffs on South African (SA) imports has heightened the urgency to diversify and expand SA’s agricultural export markets, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, which offer significant growth potential.

South Africa’s 2024-25 winter crop harvest, including wheat, barley, canola, oats, and sweet lupines, is underway, with a focus on the Western Cape, which accounts for 70% of wheat plantings and significant portions of other winter crops.

South Africa’s wine industry is thriving due to its deep connection to the land, as highlighted in Tim Atkin’s 2025 South Africa Special Report. Winemakers focus on single-vineyard wines that reflect unique places and vintages, prioritizing nature over style.

John Steenhuisen, South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, responded on Monday at a press conference to the 30% tariff imposed by the US on South African products. He noted significant pressure from American consumers and food manufacturers, who are concerned that the tariffs will increase costs for US consumers and limit supply.
The US’s decision to impose a steep tariff on imports from SA has ignited an urgent discussion on how best to minimise the effect of these measures on various exporting sectors, including agriculture. In addition to the ongoing conversation about expanding SA’s agricultural export markets, we believe the country must accelerate its efforts to promote agricultural products in international markets.

The Middle East, with a population of nearly 411 million, relies heavily on wheat imports due to rapid population growth and limited local grain production. Key countries—Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia—face unique challenges in meeting wheat demand.

South Africa faces a worsening water crisis driven by climate change, ageing infrastructure, pollution, and unequal access, with nearly half of treated water lost to leaks, theft, and poor management. A growing discourse explores whether artificial intelligence (AI) can address these challenges by enabling smarter, data-driven decisions in water management.

In China, drones covered 173 million hectares in 2024, generating a $1.8 billion market and employing nearly 500,000 people, including over 12,000 female operators. The technology has expanded from crop spraying to transportation, sowing, fertilization, and monitoring.
