South Africa’s red meat sector faces a potential R10.6 billion loss in Gross Production Value over the next five years if it does not address ongoing animal disease outbreaks and escalating input costs. The August 2025 BFAP report, commissioned by Red Meat Industry Services, warns that the industry remains far from its Strategy 2030 target of R71.5 billion due to internal weaknesses and external shocks, and stresses that only immediate, coordinated investment in animal health and export markets can secure sustainable growth.

South Africa produces up to 2,500 tons of honey per year but consumes nearly double that amount. The country relies heavily on imported natural honey, with more than 80% coming from China. Other import sources include Zambia, India, Poland and Yemen. “Given the high demand, there has been an increase in very poor-quality products and sometimes fake honey,” Steenhuisen said. In December, the Department of Agriculture’s Directorate of Inspection Services will conduct another operation to remove such products from stores. “This is part of our effort to ensure citizens receive the quality goods they intended to buy,” his speech stated.

Global temperatures in both the atmosphere and oceans have recently spiked. Oceans are absorbing 90% of extra heat from the earth that isn’t absorbed by plants. Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

South Africa’s debt-to-GDP ratio is set to keep rising into the 2030s despite National Treasury forecasts of a peak in 2025/26, as economic growth remains too weak to stabilise the burden.Treasury has predicted a debt peak in every budget since 2009, yet the ratio has climbed from 24% in 2010 to over 75% in 2025.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has accused coalition partner the Democratic Alliance (DA) of obstructing land redistribution and broader economic transformation, branding it a “mouthpiece” for private capital and the primary “stumbling block” to amending Section 25 of the Constitution for expropriation without compensation.

South African farmers in the eastern regions—Gauteng, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape—are already tilling land to capitalize on early summer rains, focusing on yellow maize and soybeans vital for livestock feed. After a 2024-25 season delayed by six weeks, the 2025-26 planting is now on schedule, enabling crops to mature before late-season frost risks.

South Africa’s vegetable sector is experiencing an oversupply-driven price deflation of 11% on average in October 2025, with onions down 10% and cabbage 50% year-on-year, thanks to excellent growing conditions and a mild winter.
