After publishing a sharp contraction of -12,2% year-on-year in 2023 of the agricultural gross value-added performance, Statistics South Africa revised the figures to a mild contraction of -4,8% year-on-year. This revised figure is roughly in line with the expectations of various researchers, most notably the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP).  The mid-summer drought, which has led to a 21% year-on-year decline in South Africa's summer grains and oilseed production to an expected harvest of 15,9 million tonnes in the 2023/24 season, will likely reflect on the second and third quarter figures of the sector performance.

The Namibian chicken industry is rejoicing following the government’s decision to lift a one-year prohibition on importing chickens from neighbouring South Africa. This decision, which has been well received by the Poultry Producers’ Association of Namibia (PPA), provides much-needed relief and lays the groundwork for a more stable poultry market. Louis Kleynhans, the chairperson of PPA, conveyed his organisation’s backing for the decision, highlighting the significance of biosecurity. He said they will only approve the imported chicken if it comes from South African farms certified as free of avian influenza and if it enters Namibia through proper legal channels. Namibia heavily depends on importing poultry from South Africa, consuming about 2 500 tonnes of chicken every month. The removal of the ban is anticipated to stabilise the market by boosting the total supply of chicken.

Giraffes occur throughout most of the savanna landscapes in sub-Saharan Africa. Fewer than 70,000 are left; a sharp decline from the estimated 150,000 in the 1980s. This makes it even more relevant to understand their diversity, as increased conservation efforts are needed to safeguard this diversity for the future. READ MORE

We believe that regardless of the formation of the coalition the ANC settles with, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) policies should be maintained. Still, from a reading of the top four political parties trailing the ANC in the voter outcome, two stand out with contrasting views on land reform to the current policy path, namely, the Economic Freedom Front (EFF) and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party). These parties have a strong preference for the expropriation of land without compensation. READ MORE

The cost of producing poultry has continued its upward trend, leading to many in the industry facing economic uncertainty – and some considering ceasing poultry production altogether. For egg producers specifically, the speed and scale of rising costs is unprecedented; the last two years alone have seen significant increases that can be partly attributed to feed and energy costs. Compared to 2016-2020 prices, the increase in feed price will add £7.50 to the cost of keeping a hen, or 30p/dozen eggs (Joice and Hill, 2022). READ MORE

In addition, the impact of heavy rainfall, which has also hit other wine-growing regions including the UK and Germany, have been considerable in Beaujolais and Burgundy, with the threat of mildew, which caused major issues in 2023, could happen again across the late spring and early summer months. Like it or not, Europe is currently just a free association of states, aimed at protecting and developing a common economy. It was in fact born as the "European Economic Community" and although since then unionist ambitions aimed at creating a socio-political entity in the style of the United States of America have grown significantly , in practice the objective is still far away.

Job losses caused by the closing of coal-fired power plants, aimed at decarbonising South Africa’s economy, will be dwarfed by the job losses that could stem from export levies such as the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The Climate Watch looks five months ahead, and the latest one is little changed from the previous, extending the relatively dry and warm outlook for most of the country into October.

Suid Afrika in Fokus-
