The world endured elevated food prices in the past few years for various reasons, ranging from drought in major agricultural-producing regions of South America to the Black Sea wars. But in recent months, global agricultural prices and consumer food prices have softened. Food prices globally are roughly 25% less than the peak levels reached in March 2022, which was right after Russia invaded Ukraine and caused much disruption and panic in the agricultural markets. At the moment, global agricultural observers are shifting their focus to the new production season, which is 2024/25, of grains and oilseeds. Production has recently started in the northern hemisphere, which is in the summer season. Farmers may begin tilling the land in the southern hemisphere around October 2024.

The Agricultural Business Chamber said on Monday that Ramaphosa’s land-release programme could bring more black players into the sector.

In his opening of parliament address last Thursday, Ramaphosa outlined plans to boost funding for land reform, prioritising the transfer of state-owned land and enhancing post-settlement support by strengthening the institutional capabilities of relevant bodies. Last year, the commission on restitution of land rights said that it would take SA more than 30 years and more than R170bn to settle land claim backlogs given the present budget and rate. The chamber said that over time the government had amassed more than 2-million hectares, and it was never released to beneficiaries with title deeds.

The creation of a new, standalone ministry to oversee the implementation of land reform and spearhead rural development may be the resolution needed to put emphasis on the land restitution and redistribution programme and give impetus to what is needed to expedite the resolution of the land question and drive a successful land reform programme. So says Peter Setou, Chief Executive of the Vumelana Advisory Fund, a non-profit organisation that helps beneficiaries of the land reform programme to use restored land productively to create much-needed jobs, income and skills. The USDA on July 12 also forecast durum wheat production in the United States in 2024 at 89.288 million bushels, up 29.959 million bushels, or 50%, from 59.329 million bushels in 2023. The durum crop was forecast to be the largest since 103.914 million bushels in 2016 and the second largest since 2010. READ MORE

Many black farmers we interact with tell countless stories of frustration and their inability to expand and commercialise their farming operations because of their lack of secure access to land. In instances where they have access to the land, the short-term leases that the government provides them, hinder accessing capital and expanding their farming operations to commercial and viable businesses that could create sustainable jobs for communities. The Orange Focus Group of the Citrus Growers' Association of Southern Africa (CGA) met on the 23rd of July to review the export estimates on oranges for the 2024 season. A further downward adjustment was made to the latest projected export figures for Navels, while the category for Valencia oranges received its biggest projection cut of the season, mostly driven by recently reported extreme weather events in key growing regions. READ MORE

The government could face an avalanche of claims if it doesn’t act soon to appeal the High Court judgement overturning its policy on compensation for poultry culled due to bird flu infection. Since 2017, the department has based its compensation policy on the premise that birds infected with bird flu have no value.

The demand for animal protein in Asia is on the rise due to factors such as population growth and increased prosperity. However, there are challenges when it comes to having water and land for animal farming in parts of Asia. Moreover, animal production has an impact as it releases greenhouse gases and contaminants into the atmosphere.

Agricultural minster John Steenhuisen has announced measures to contain a foot and mouth outbreak in the Eastern Cape. He stated that 24 cases have been identified in the province, with the bulk being reported in Humansdorp.

Bird flu outbreak in Weld County in north-east Colorado was the largest in the state since 2022. As the state’s largest agricultural county, with about 850 000ha of land dedicated to farming and raising livestock, the county was also the leader in dairy production, the report stated.

Energy demand growth is forecast to be among the highest levels this year and next, compared with the last two decades, the International Energy Agency (IEA) notes in its ‘Electricity Mid-Year Update’ report.
