NEWS- NUUS
While the 2023-24 mid-summer drought has been the central theme of the downbeat performance of South Africa's agriculture this year, we see a welcome positive change in the jobs data. Statistics South Africa data show that primary agriculture employment improved by 4% from the previous quarter to 935k jobs in the third quarter. However, from an annual perspective, the performance is weak, down 2% year-on-year. Still, the primary agricultural employment of 935k people is well above the long-term jobs of 799k. The poor annual performance mirrors the harsh summer season we are leaving behind. Some subsectors showing a quarterly increase in employment include livestock, horticulture, game hunting, and the production of organic fertilizers. Meanwhile, forestry and aquaculture recorded job losses from the year's second quarter.
According to Trade Map data, China spends just more than $200bn a year on imports of agricultural products. The US is the second largest agricultural supplier to China after Brazil. Other suppliers include Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Canada, Vietnam, France, Russia, Argentina, Chile, Ukraine, the Netherlands and Malaysia. Indeed, if one looks at China’s agricultural imports, the top products include oilseeds, meat, grains, fruits and nuts, cotton, beverages and spirits, sugar, wool and vegetables. The US has exposure to oilseeds and meat.
Some companies that are under no legal obligation to cut their emissions have set voluntary targets, which they can meet partially through buying credits on a voluntary carbon market. In 2022, the voluntary market was valued at about $2 billion worldwide. But the market value plummeted to $723 million last year after being shaken by repeated scandals. Linking up carbon projects currently in the voluntary market with the Paris Agreement system could boost confidence. Developers of projects like mangrove restoration to regenerative agriculture can apply to have their credits sold under the UN system, meaning that if approved, they could sell in either that system or on the voluntary market. Experts expect UN-approved credits to carry a higher price tag.

Ghana, the world's number two cocoa producer, has raised the fixed farmgate price paid to cocoa farmers for the second time this 2024/25 season to help boost farmers' incomes, President Nana Akufo-Addo said. Akufo-Addo, whose two-term mandate ends on Jan. 7, 2025, said at a farmers' award ceremony late on Friday that cocoa farmers would now receive 49,600 Ghanaian cedi ($3,062) per metric ton compared with the 48,000 Ghanaian cedi announced when the season opened on Sept. 1.
President Trump has indicated in his campaign trail that the US may impose up to 20% tariff on all imports and 60% on goods from China. We don't know how China would react to such tariffs. However, if China retaliates as it did the last time, the US soybean and maize farmers and pork producers would again be negatively affected. We could see this through disruptions in global grains and oilseed prices. The US is a significant producer, and when its grain market activity is disrupted, the impact tends to be felt globally. Moreover, US farmers could also start exploring other export markets they have not been as present to hedge against China's risks. READ MORE

We saw a surge in South Africa’s white maize price today (see chart — rands per tonne) today. This primarily reflects the impact of the 2023-24 drought on the harvest. The weaker domestic currency also added to this surge. Fundamentally, the white maize supplies are tight in South Africa, and the Southern Africa region following a poor harvest. Still, South Africa has sufficient supplies for domestic consumption and exports to the region. We forecast South Africa’s overall maize exports at 1.9 million tonnes through to April 2025 marketing year (about 1.2 million tonnes is white maize and 700k tonnes is yellow). About a million tonnes have already been exported, mainly to the Southern Africa region.
