The South African Poultry Association (Sapa) is pressing for immediate government action to roll out vaccinations to avert a catastrophic bird flu outbreak, driven by wild birds migrating from Europe. The R65-billion poultry sector—South Africa’s second-largest agricultural industry—supports nearly 58,000 jobs and provides affordable protein to millions. However, it remains at risk after the devastating 2023 outbreak, which saw 9.6 million birds culled (over a third of long-living poultry in Gauteng), costing the industry at least R9.5 billion. The outbreak, involving H5N1 and H7N6 strains, led to egg prices soaring by over 30% and disrupted food security.
Standard Bank has closed a R4.9bn deal for the 140MW Ishwati Emoyeni Wind Farm project, marking the first time a renewable energy project of this scale has reached financial close with an energy trader as the offtaker. The wind farm, located in the Western Cape, is being developed by Africa Clean Energy Developments. The Cape Town-based renewable energy development company has African Infrastructure Investment Managers and Reatile, a Johannesburg-based black-owned investment company, as shareholders. The bank aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2040 and from its financed emissions by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement.

South Africa’s national debt has ballooned to over R5 trillion, a figure that looms large over any talk of rebuilding. The ANC’s reliance on bailouts—R50 billion annually for Eskom alone—has drained the Treasury, with little to show for it. Municipal debt to Eskom exceeds R100 billion, rising by R18 billion yearly, while taxpayers and paying electricity customers foot the bill through higher tariffs or subsidies. The illusion here is that this borrowing fuels progress; instead, it papers over systemic failures, leaving future generations to pay the price. READ MORE
Palm oil futures have surged since mid-2024, driven by tight supplies and robust demand, reaching a peak of $1,250 per tonne by year-end. Despite competition from cheaper soybean oil, palm oil’s price has climbed 31% since late August, supported by limited alternatives and increased biodiesel use, particularly in Indonesia. READ MORE
In 1994 when South Africa became a democracy, white farmers owned 77.580 million hectares of farmland out of the total surface area of 122 million hectares. The new government set a target of redistributing 30% of this within five years. This target date has been moved several times and is now 2030. READ MORE
Opening up new markets would also refocus South Africans on the port issues and rural roads, which require significant improvement. As things stand, the more attention given to global issues that various regions of South Africa have limited influence on, the more domestic challenges will continue to constrain the sector's growth. Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.
15 Best South Africa News Podcasts
AGRI NEWS NET on NUMBER 7 for the month of January 2025
The numbers tell the story: Audiocast listenership is climbing, and agriculture is no exception. By some estimates, over 100 million people in the U.S. alone are tuning into podcasts, with farmers and ranchers making up a dedicated slice of that pie. Successful ag-focused shows are racking up thousands of downloads per episode, and some are even attracting sponsors eager to reach this engaged audience.
The legend of Bernard Shabangu’s grandfather, Bhobho, spearing a lion in Mpumalanga highlights a family legacy disrupted by South Africa’s apartheid-era Group Areas Act of 1950, which stripped Bhobho of his land without compensation.
South Africa, as the G20 chair, also heads the B20, the business forum for the G20, which includes 19 countries plus the African Union (AU) and European Union (EU). Its agenda, “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability,” guides the B20’s autonomous workstreams. The South African agricultural sector, a key B20 stakeholder, is urged to set ambitious goals:
AgriSA’s President, Jaco Minnaar, and CEO, Johann Kotzé, will participate in the official launch of the B20 South Africa summit on 24-25 February in Cape Town. The event will bring together key decision-makers to discuss pivotal issues shaping South Africa’s economic future.
At ACRU, a Greenwich Village bistro opened in October 2024, Australian chef Daniel Garwood introduced an unusual American barbecue brisket made from dairy cow beef—a departure from typical U.S. expectations where dairy cows are primarily milk producers, their meat often relegated to pet food or fast food due to perceived lower quality.

In 2024, South Africa’s agricultural exports hit a new record of $13.7 billion, or R250.9 billion, up 4% from the year before. The African continent remained a significant market in terms of value, accounting for 44% in 2024. This is up from the 2023 share of 38%. Europe became the second-largest market, surpassing Asia for the first time in a long time with 29% of exports.
978,140 South Africans, or 1.5% of the population, pay 60.9% of all personal income tax, the government’s biggest revenue generator. Even more concerning is that only 235,542 South Africans, or 0.4% of the population, pay 33% of all personal income tax.
South Africa’s agricultural sector faced a tough 2023-24 production season due to a mid-summer drought and animal diseases, contributing to a 1% drop in primary agriculture employment (from Q3 to 924,000 jobs in Q4 2024).
